In recent months, we’ve had some lively discussion based on John Hick’s “Between Faith & Doubt”. Hick is an eminent philosopher of religion. His book takes the form of a dialogue between him and someone / anyone who is a religious sceptic.. Neither of them is dogmatic and their approach suited our group very well.
In the Autumn we aim to explore Karen Armstrong’s “The Case for God”. In this book, her targets are religious fundamentalists on the one hand and militant atheists on the other. She accuses both factions of misunderstanding the nature of God and of doing so in similar ways. She says: “It is not easy to talk about what we call ‘God’”. This means, she believes, that “we have to be willing to let go of what we think we know, in order to appreciate truths we have never dreamed of.”
So, we look forward to more stimulating discussion! No doubt in the course of it all, there will be moments of much laughter as well as the sharing of some searching questions. Do come and join us if this is of interest.
We meet on Tuesday mornings from 10.00am at 1 Solent Place, recommenced on September 20th.
