Notes

The group continues to read a variety of plays, but, strangely, many seem to be comedies relating to later stages in life – what a surprise! It just goes to prove that at our age we see the humour in the human condition!
A few members have been lost through personal reasons – but they have been replaced by new faces and we are all now really comfortable with each other, enabling us to enjoy whatever we are reading without embarrassment or shock at the plays’ content or language. Because of the make-up of the casts of many plays where male parts outnumber female ones (the opposite of the Group) we regularly have women reading men’s parts and, on one memorable occasion, when we read “Stepping Out”, we had a man reading a woman’s part and the mental picture of Geoffrey prancing around the dance studio in Lycra was a delight!
We recently joined forces with the Art Appreciation Group (among others) for a visit to The Pitmen Painters at Malvern Festival Theatre – a magnificent National Theatre production with a very wordy and witty script with moments of pathos and poignancy. (Thanks to Nick Mason for organising it). Unfortunately, this is one play we haven’t read, but it would be impossible to do it justice as the business on the stage is as important as the words themselves and would be difficult to convey in a reading alone.
