Our history group consists of some 50 members who are enthusiastic about the various events we organise throughout the year. If there any specific requests for outings we would be very pleased to hear about them.

In the summer of 2008 a visit was made to Coughton Court. Our meeting in April 2011 saw another connection with the Court; however on this occasion our speaker, Ann Fox, gave us a lively and informative talk on the Throckmorton Family of Coughton,

Our first outing in May was to Avoncroft Museum at Bromsgrove. The museum houses over 27 structures, mostly from Worcestershire or just over the county borders, which have been rescued and rebuilt at the open air museum. The structures range from a 15th merchants house to a 1946 prefab, which many of us recognised and remembered from our younger days.

In June we were privileged to be given a guided tour of Pershore Abbey by Selwyn Higgins. We were pleased that the maximum number allowed for a guided tour turned up for the visit. Despite the large crane and additional lighting installed for the filming of Songs of Praise the following day it was an interesting visit. We expect like many others of our members we have been into the Abbey many times for concerts and other events, but were never aware of the magnificence of the building.

In July we visited the Worcestershire County Museum at Hartlebury. It really is a privilege to be able to visit buildings of this quality so that we are able to appreciate how past generations lived their lives. Additionally at Hartlebury, there is a particularly interesting collection of Gypsy caravans and horse- drawn vehicles which the members enjoyed seeing.

The final summer outing of the year saw 30 members enjoy a visit to the Jacobean Stanway House & Fountain. This building is still a family home currently occupied by Lord and Lady Neidpath, and dates back over 1300 years. This property has a fountain which was installed in 2004 and rises to over 300 feet, the tallest in Britain.

We returned to the Red Cross Centre in September for the commencement of our winter programme.
